New York, Brooklyn and Rockville Centre to merge Theology Seminary Program at Dunwoodie


NEW SINGLE PROGRAM OF PRIESTLY FORMATION ANNOUNCED BY ARCHDIOCESE OF NEW YORK, DIOCESE OF BROOKLYN AND DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRE
November 10, 2011, Huntington, New York – The Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Brooklyn and the Diocese of Rockville Centre today announced the formalization of a joint operating agreement to create a single program for priestly formation for their three dioceses and beyond, a new program for the ongoing theological and spiritual enrichment of priests and permanent deacons, and a centralization of lay ministry programs to support the New Evangelization.

Cathedral Prep Weekend December 9-11, 2011 (Saturday 9-7pm open to 7th & 8th grade boys)


Our next Cathedral Prep Weekend will begin on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 5:15 PM and run until Sunday afternoon, December 11, 2011. Friday evening we will join the Yonkers Youth Rally to be held at St. Joseph's Seminary. Saturday, we welcome 7th and 8th grade boys for the day. We will be visiting our fellow Cathedral Prep Seminary students in Elmhurst, Queens for a tour, Mass and sports. Sunday, our high school students will join Archbishop Timothy Dolan for 10:15 am Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.(Families are welcome to attend the Mass.) After Mass we will tour the holiday sites around Rockefeller Center.
Our Prep gathers young men in high school to draw closer to the Lord Jesus and to experience good fraternity with others while considering the call to be a parish priest. There will be conferences, Confession, Holy Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, sports and opportunities to meet seminarians. All high school age young men interested in a vocation to the priesthood are encouraged to attend the weekends at St. Joseph's Seminary (201 Seminary Ave. Yonkers, NY 10704). Archdiocesan Priest's 50+ mile Pilgrimage to St. Patrick's Cathedral for his Parish School


A priest from northern Westchester is walking all the way from Peekskill to New York City.
Father John Higgins, 43, of the Assumption parish, will walk the 58 miles to St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan today and tomorrow. Higgins says he trying to raise $105,000 to help the Assumption School, which has been hit hard by the economic downturn of the past several years.
The plan is for Father Higgins to walk the roads of some of the river towns along the Hudson on his way down to Yonkers. He plans to stay overnight at St. Joseph's Seminary, where he studied for the priesthood.
Higgins says he hopes to make it to St. Patrick's Cathedral to offer Mass at 6:30pm on Friday.

Death of John Chervokas (1937-2011) -Man behind the 1970's New York Priest Campaign

Mr. John Chervokas is credited with the creation of one of the most popular Charmin television commercials starring Mr. Wipple. In addition, Mr. Chervokas was the man behind the 1970's "New York Priest: God Knows What He Does for a Living" Campaign for the Archdiocese of New York.

New Priests Younger, Influenced by Parish Priests, Catholic Education, Service as Altar Boys, Social, Church Environment

WASHINGTON—The average age of men ordained to the priesthood in 2011 is trending younger with the average age for the 2011 class at 34, with more than half between the ages of 25 and 34. This is slightly younger than in 2010, and follows the trend over the past five years of ordinands becoming younger.

Changes to Seminary System

As part of the ongoing process to combine their seminary systems begun three years ago, the Archdiocese of New York has decided to merge its program of priestly formation for college men—the Saint John Neumann House currently located at Saint Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers—with the one now in place at the Cathedral Seminary Residence in Douglaston, Queens. Pre-Christmas Discernment Overnight

For all of our Archdiocese of New York Discerners ages 18 years and up, there will be an overnight at St. Joseph's Seminary from Tuesday, December 21st (arrival not before 4:00 PM) until Wednesday, December 22nd (1:00 PM). There will be Mass, Holy Hour, Confession, meals and some recreation in our gym.
