Pope Declares Year of Priests

St. John Vianney

Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI declared a year of the priest in an effort to encourage "spiritual perfection" in priests.

The pope will open the special year with a vespers service at the Vatican June 19 -- the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the day for the sanctification of priests. He will close the celebrations during a World Meeting of Priests in St. Peter's Square June 19, 2010.

The pope made the announcement during an audience March 16 with members of the Vatican Congregation for Clergy.

He met with some 70 participants of the congregation's March 16-18 plenary assembly, which focused on the missionary identity of the priest and his mission to sanctify, teach and govern. Read full article from Catholic News Service

Gearing up for Fathers' Day - Father of the Father

Fr. Luke Sweeney, his father Luke Sweeney, and Archbishop Dolan
The presence of a father is invaluable in a boy’s life. As a vocation director I witness the wounds left when fathers are physically or emotionally distant from a young man. There can be anger that builds up, problems of relating in an appropriate masculine way and difficulties in school. I have been blessed with my dad’s continued active presence in my life.

Archbishop Dolan Taught What Priesthood Means by Father Raymond J. de Souza

The garrulous Timothy Michael Dolan, preacher and raconteur extraordinaire, chooses his words carefully. And when ordained a bishop in 2001 in St. Louis, his first words were: “Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on me! Immaculate Heart of Mary, help me!”
He then went on to express his joy in the priesthood, his love for the Church, his delight in his parishioners — and also brought the house down with his ever-ready wit.
The newly appointed archbishop of New York is just that — a larger-than-life figure completely at home with the simple faith of ordinary Catholics.

Discernment Weekend - April 2009

Fr. Luke Sweeney and Fr. Luis Saldaña will lead the Spring Discernment Weekend for young men 18 to 40 years of age from the 3rd until the 5th of April 2009. The weekend starts with 6:00 PM Evening Prayer in our mangificent chapel on Friday afternoon and will conclude about 2:00 PM on Palm Sunday after joining the seminarians at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
It is an opportunity to meet and to speak with other young men who are considering this profound calling to the Priesthood. There are also chances to meet with seminarians, both those who have recently taken the step out of the world and into the seminary, and those getting ready to step back out of the seminary and into parish life as priests. We will discuss who a priest is and what promises a priest takes (obedience and celibacy). There will also be an opportunity to hear a few young diocesan priests tell us what it has been like for them offering the sacraments, preaching, visiting and being with their parishioners whose souls have been entrusted to them.

Hero of the Pro-Life Movement goes Home to God

'Most admired priest'-theologian mourned.
The death of Monsignor William B. Smith - a promoter of Catholic moral teachings for almost 40 years - will leave a gaping hole in New York's Catholic community, mourners said yesterday at a wake for Smith at St. Joseph's Seminary.
"Over the years, he became, in my opinion, the most admired priest in the Archdiocese of New York," said Monsignor Francis McAree, former rector of the seminary, where Smith served as professor of moral theology since 1971.
